Choosing a
flight school is a highly individual decision. Throughout your flight training in Los Angeles
experience, you will be devoting a significant amount of time and money.
The flight school you choose will have an impact on the type of pilot you become. It is critical
that you thoroughly research
your flight training alternatives, just as you would any other investment. Some people spend more time
researching camera purchases than they do flight
schools.
To begin your search for a flight school,
you must first understand the two types of flight training
and flight school alternatives
available to you.
Part 61 Flight
Training Schools
Flight schools
that operate under FAR 61 guidelines have more flexibility than part 141 institutions.
The FAA does not require flight instructors to follow a syllabus under
Part 61. While instructors must follow
the FAA's educational criteria (what must be covered), they can determine
when and where to cover required materials
based on student
development.
Part 141 Flight
Training Schools
Part 141 flight schools
train in a more structured setting than their
Part 61 counterparts. Part 141 requires
flying schools to use an FAA-approved syllabus. Throughout the course, instructors and students must adhere to
the approved syllabus. Stage checks shall be
performed regularly by either the chief flight instructor or his/her
designees. Students must also complete
a certain number
of hours of classroom or one-on-one ground
instruction with a flight
instructor.
